Over 190 baby ring-billed gulls saved!
Last Monday, rescue team’s Sarrah and Stacey led a group to gather over 170 baby ring-billed gulls who had jumped from a scalding hot roof. They recruited Sara (staff member and rescue volunteer), Amanda (intern) and Geneviève (volunteer) to lend a helping hand. After 3 hours of capturing each gull and placing them into boxes, it took 3 vehicles to transport them all to TWC. At the centre, the medical and rehabilitation teams pooled together and spent about 5 hours to ensure that each baby was assessed and given fluids – some were even treated for burns on their feet. The rescue team consulted rehabilitation centres in North America to discover that no known knowledge of this unique situation had happened before. But at their recommendation and in spite of the risk the babies might jump again, the rescue team decided they had to try to reunite the babies with their parents for their best chance of survival. Over two days, the team slowly and carefully tried reintroducing the babies back into the colony of thousands of gulls after the roof cooled. With the help of building employees Fred and Allison, the rescue team monitored the gulls multiple times a day. Sadly, many of the babies jumped again. Currently, there are over 90 baby gulls in care, and TWC’s rescue team is no longer taking the risk to return them back to the roof colony. As a charity run solely on donations, this puts a lot of strain on current resources and we desperately need help – many pounds of fresh/frozen wild-caught freshwater smelt, hundreds of chicken eggs, hard plastic kiddie pools and every spare dollar are needed to care for the babies and feed all those hungry mouths. If you’d like to help, please drop off donated items to TWC or make an online donation today!https://www.torontowildlifecentre.com/donate/one-time-gift/
